Chancery case papers, 1700-1791.

This series consists of the original papers of cases heard before the Court of Chancery. Almost no case is complete, but a complete case would include (but not be limited to) a complaint (bill or petition) stating the facts of the case as the complainant sees them; the cause of action (will or other document on which case is based); answer of the defendant; master's report stating his opinion; decree (decision or judgment) of the court settling the case. Causes at issue include primarily the settlement and management of estates as well as cases involving guardianship, bankruptcy, trusts, the mentally ill, and fraud.
